Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann (1809 - 1891) was a French civic planner, whose name is associated with the urbanistic reconstruction of Paris. Being assigned by Napoleon III in charge of creating an architectural reform plan of Paris, Haussmann built Bois de Boulogne and brought significant improvements in more parks. The gardens of Luxemburg Palace were cut in order to create new streets, and Sebastopol Boulevard, the southern part of which is today named Saint Michel Boulevard, was transferred in a highly populated district. Haussmann became a member of the Fine Arts Academy in 1867 and received the cross of the Legion of Honor in 1862. His name lives forever as Haussmann Boulevard. Based on the Haussman urban trend, a series of European cities were built, Bucharest being among them (Magheru Boulevard).
